Searching Newspaper Articles
How do I search for articles in your newspapers?
The search bar, located near the top of the webpage, will give you our most basic search. When you search for keywords, all matches of these words will be returned. If too many results are returned or you wish to have more control over your search, try our advanced search option. The advanced search page allows you to search for specific dates or date ranges as well as by location and key words. Please keep in mind that we are regularly adding content to our website, so if you do not find what you are looking for now, we may have it at a later date.

How do I use the Advanced Search option?
The Advanced Search option allows you to narrow down your search by publication date, publication location, or both. To limit the publication date to a range of years, first click on the round button next to "Between Years" and then choose a beginning year and an ending year.
To limit your selection of newspapers to a specific date (such as your birthday), first click on the round button next to "Exact Date", then select a specific month, day, and year. You may now continue narrowing your selection by specifying a publication location, or type your search terms in the "search terms" field and click on the "search" button. To continue narrowing down results by the publication place, select the country of publication. You may now search in that country or select a specific state. Once you select a state, you may search within the whole state or continue to select a city. You may also search within your selected city or select a specific newspaper title. Once you have narrowed down your selection of newspapers, type your search terms in the "search terms" field, and click on the "search" button.

How do I narrow down my search criteria?
Our collection of newspapers includes hundreds of titles, ranging from the 1700s to the present. You can access the advanced search page by clicking on the " advanced search" link, located at the top of our website, above the search bar. You can search smaller sections of our archive by limiting the date and place of publication for your newspaper.

How do I make my searches more effective?
Use the Advanced Search option to narrow down newspapers you are searching. Use at least two or three search terms. By using additional keywords, you can locate documents that are closer related to your search. Be specific and try to pick words that are unique to the topic you're investigating. Use historically appropriate terms. For example, the Industrial Revolution was not dubbed as such by historians until later years. Do not use common words such as "and", "the", "to". These words are generally discarded during a search.

What is Boolean searching?
Three common Boolean operators are AND, OR, and NOT. The AND operator between two words will result in documents which contain both of these words. Example: typing
pear and apple will return only hits with both words on the same page. The OR operator between two words or other values means you are searching for documents that contain at least one of the words. Typing
pear OR apple will return hits if the word "pear" is on the page or the word "apple" is on the page or if both words are on the page. The AND NOT operator between two words or other values means you are searching for documents that contain the first word before the AND NOT operator, but not the second word that follows it. An example is "pear AND NOT apple", will return hits only if a page has the word "pear", but if the page has both of the words, the result will not be displayed.

Why do I need a plug-in?
Each page in this archive is quite large. In order to increase the speed at which you download the images, the original full-page scans are compressed using a format called a PDF. You must have a current Adobe Acrobat Reader™ plug-in so that your browser may view these optimized images. By converting the original images to PDF, we are able to offer faster access and more features than an ordinary image file.

How are prints packaged to prevent damage during shipping?
NewspaperARCHIVE.com provides two options for mailing:
- Tube Mailer - Holds 2 prints per tube. The tube mailer protects the single print better than a flat mailer but will curl the paper.
- Flat Mailer - Holds 20 prints per mailer. The flat mailer will keep the print flat but has a better chance of being damaged during shipping.
